The intestinal lining absorbs nutrients while helping keep unwanted microbes and inflammatory compounds inside the gut.

When the microbiome falls out of balance, that barrier may become less effective. Bacterial products and inflammatory signals can then enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body, including to the skin.

2. Gut bacteria help direct immune activity

Much of the immune system sits in and around the digestive tract.

Gut microbes help teach immune cells when to respond and when to stand down. A less balanced microbiome may promote chronic, low-grade inflammation.

That matters because many common skin problems involve an immune response that has become too active or poorly regulated.

3. Gut microbes make compounds that affect the skin

Stress can change gut movement, sensitivity, and the microbiome. Gut discomfort can also increase stress and disrupt sleep.

The skin may respond to that cycle with more redness, itching, oil, or inflammation. This may explain why digestive symptoms and skin flares sometimes worsen together.

Which skin conditions have links to gut health?

Researchers have found gut microbiome differences in people with several inflammatory skin conditions.

A link does not prove that an imbalanced gut microbiome caused a skin condition. Genes, hormones, age, sun exposure, medications, diet, stress, sleep, and skin care also matter.

For people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond, several of these factors can shift at once. Changes in hormones, sleep, digestion, stress, and skin barrier function may overlap. A whole-body view can help, even when the gut is only one part of the story.

Can probiotics improve skin health?

The research looks promising, but it needs context.

A large 2025 review mapped 516 studies on oral probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics for skin health and skin disease. Most focused on probiotics. Atopic dermatitis had the deepest evidence base, while research on acne, psoriasis, hydration, wrinkles, elasticity, and response to UV exposure continued to grow.

But probiotic benefits can be strain-specific. Results from one strain do not automatically apply to every probiotic with a similar name.

Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus plantarum have been studied for skin outcomes:

  • Bifidobacterium has been found to improve several facial wrinkle measures in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of women ages 33 to 60.
  • Lactobacillus plantarum has been found to improve skin hydration, elasticity, wrinkle depth, and skin gloss in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of women with dry skin and wrinkles.

These studies do not prove that every B. lactis or L. plantarum strain will produce the same results for everyone.

Probiotics often get the attention. Prebiotic fiber helps create the environment they need.
